Trainer Spotlight: Darla Parry

Q: How long have you been an Ukeru trainer?

A: I have been an Ukeru trainer for 2 years!

Q: What population do you work with? What inspired you to get into this field?

A: I have been working in schools for 29 years and have had several different roles in Exceptional Student Education. I currently work as the district crisis management trainer. I train the teachers, aides, administrators and school staff who work with all students PK-12 in general education and ESE settings.

Q: What part of Ukeru do you enjoy teaching the most and why?

A: I love teaching about the brain and the impact that trauma has on the brain. I also enjoy teaching the physical skills because they are practical skills that people feel safe using.

Q: What would you say to someone who is unsure about using Ukeru?

A: Ukeru is a great tool to add to your tool box. All employees can use the skills taught, regardless of their position. With practice, the physical skills are easy to use and encourage de-escalation without restraint.

Q: What advice or tip would you give to a new Ukeru trainer?

A: Change can happen but it may be slow. Mindshifts take time. Learn the material and practice the physical skills. Review the videos before training. Be yourself and have fun!

Q: How has Ukeru impacted your life?

A: Ukeru has helped me create a culture shift within my school district which has led to a reduced number of restraints.

Q: What is your favorite quote or a motto that you like to live by?

A: Behavior is communication

Q: What three words would you use to describe Ukeru?

A: comforting, receiving, de-escalation
