Q: How long have you been an Ukeru trainer?
A: 7 Years
Q: What population do you work with? What inspired you to get into this field?
A: K-8 students with emotional disturbance. The school serves 4 different levels of care including acute, partial, outpatient and therapeutic services. I was able to get a glimpse of what it meant to support others through a couple different programs while in high school. I fell in love with this field when I experienced the reward of making an impact on clients. Now as a supervisor, I am able to support and celebrate those positive moments with front-line staff.
Q: What part of Ukeru do you enjoy teaching the most and why?
A: I love the build up of material with Ukeru. I can teach about how trauma impacts the brain, and it allows our trainees to start connecting the behavior, and it creates a moment of understanding that there is a “why” behind the behavior. It naturally leads into how we can approach students when they are at their worst. I love these areas of the material because it creates conversation among the group.
Q: What would you say to someone who is unsure about using Ukeru?
A: I would encourage them to look at the alternative. Restraints can truly be avoided with the use of Ukeru. Commit to it becoming part of the culture and you will see the positive change. Allow time and practice to get everyone on board. Provide positive feedback to staff when they are using it, and be the model to them in the building.
Q: What advice or tip would you give to a new Ukeru trainer?
A: Know the material so you are able to incorporate your own examples and stories to connect the trainees to what is being taught. The material can get heavy so find moments of humor!
Q: How has Ukeru impacted your life?
A: It has given me a different perspective on my approach to students whether it is in a crisis or not. An approach of kindness and coming from a place of caring has helped build relationships with students. I am more mindful of how I communicate and approach staff, families and really anyone I interact with throughout the day.
Q: What is your favorite quote or a motto that you like to live by?
A: “You must be the change you wish to see in the world” – Mahatma Gandhi
Q: What three words would you use to describe Ukeru?
A: Rewarding, Effective, Kindness
